Things to do in Nagano
Nagano gives you a castle that was never rebuilt and monkeys that sit in a hot spring. Matsumoto Castle is one of only a handful of original wooden keeps left in Japan — the interior is steep, dark and unmodernised, which is the point. The monkey park is a 30-minute walk in from the bus stop, and the monkeys are most reliably in the water in winter.

Matsumoto Castle
Matsumoto Castle, nicknamed the Crow Castle for its striking black exterior, is one of Japan's twelve remaining original castles. Dating to the late 16th century, it stands beautifully reflected in the surrounding moat.
Jigokudani Monkey Park
Jigokudani is the only place in the world where wild Japanese macaques bathe in natural hot spring pools. The sight of snow monkeys relaxing in steaming water surrounded by winter snow is truly unique.
